A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, helps you secure your internet data and ensure your privacy online. Here's a great summary of what they do from PCMag, in their article "you need a VPN and here's why":
A VPN creates a virtual encrypted tunnel between you and a remote server operated by a VPN service. All external internet traffic is routed through this tunnel, so your data is secure from prying eyes. Best of all, your computer appears to have the IP address of the VPN server, masking your identity.
In addition to the reasons given for using a VPN in that article, they're a great way to bypass country filters (for example, to see content usually only available in different countries), and to prevent your actual IP address being seen by websites.
